Bicycles

Bicycles are prohibited on this trail. Mechanized transport, including mountain bikes, is banned in designated wilderness under federal law by the Wilderness Act of 1964. This is enforced by the Forest Service. Do not ride here.

The trail

This is not the maintained connector the name might suggest, and it isn't really about Hickey Gap at all. Hickey Gap is the campground name. The walk itself follows Mill Creek down past four waterfalls in a little over half a mile, unofficial and unblazed but well trodden and not hard to follow. The first, sometimes called Upper Mill Creek Falls, is a long cascading slide about thirty feet high. The second is a modest ten foot drop that flows straight into the third.

The third is the one most people mean when they say Mill Creek Falls, a fifty foot slide down a cliff face into a sparkling pool, reached by a steep scramble on the north side of the falls that used to have ropes to help with the descent, most of which are gone now. A rock hop another two hundred fifty feet downstream reaches the fourth and smallest falls, usually with nobody else around even when the third is crowded.

Getting there

Forest Service roads to the Cohutta trailheads are gravel, seasonally gated, and often without cell service. Download directions before you leave pavement.

Stay near the trailheads

Sherpa Camp — a cabin at the edge of the wilderness.

The drive in from Atlanta or Chattanooga is long enough that most people are better off sleeping near the gate than starting at 4 a.m. Sherpa Camp is a small cabin on Holly Creek, on the western edge of the Cohutta Wilderness, about 25 minutes from Ellijay. It sleeps five, with a covered porch, a firepit, and a creek. Cell service ends before you get there.
