The Cohuttas are not an easy range. Most of the forty five trails in this guide are rated moderate or worse, but a handful of routes work well for a first visit, a family day, or anyone easing back into hiking.
Lake Conasauga Loop is the easiest thing in the guide: a flat mile around the highest lake in Georgia, with a campground, a swimming area, and stocked trout in the water. Pair it with Songbird Trail next door, a mile and seven tenths of nearly flat walking through habitat managed for birding, with a beaver pond partway around. Neither trail asks anything of you beyond showing up.
Grassy Mountain Fire Tower Trail is a step up in effort but not in difficulty: four and a half miles round trip with a steady, non-technical climb to a standing fire tower. The tower is closed to visitors, and the summit clearing still has the widest view in the range. It is the single most popular objective at the top of Old CCC Camp Road, for a reason.
For something with a little more texture, the lower stretch of Emery Creek Trail works for a confident beginner in summer, when the water is down. The full trail is rated strenuous, fourteen crossings over thirteen and a half miles to a pair of falls, but the first crossings near the trailhead are manageable in low water and make a reasonable out and back on their own. Wear shoes that can get wet, skip it after rain, and turn around whenever it stops being fun.
All four sit close enough together to combine into a loose day out of a base near Chatsworth or Ellijay, and all four avoid the twenty-plus river crossings that define the harder trails in this guide. Check current conditions before any trip. Even easy trails here sit inside a wilderness with no bridges and thin cell service.
