Hurricane Helene’s high winds and heavy rainfall have compounded ongoing changes to the Wilderness resulting from the 2016 drought and wildfires. These combined impacts have created dense understory growth and extensive blowdowns, resulting in hazardous trail conditions for hikers. The trails will remain closed until they can be cleared by trail crews and volunteers.
Affected: Hickory Ridge, Rough Ridge

Trails remain open, but require access from alternate routes. Additional road closures may occur due to storm damage or maintenance. Forest Service roads often close after deer season through spring to prevent damage from freeze-thaw cycles. Safety Hazards: Risk of falling trees, ice, and road damage from winter storms, as reported by the US Forest Service.
